A DNA Stain Combining Sensitivity, Safety and Stability |
The latest DNA stain on the market is GelGreen from Biotium, Inc. GelGreen is perhaps the best deal of all the new DNA stains and has a number of attractive features: |

Using GelGreen 'In-Gel' |
![]() |
Save Time...... GelGreen can be added to the agarose just before pouring a gel. DNA bands are stained almost immediately and there is no need to incubate in a bath of stain after electrophoresis. Save even more Time...... Because GelGreen is very stable in aqueous solution, it is possible to make up and store agarose containing GelGreen for immediate use at a later date. |

GelGreen Safety |
| GelGreen is among the safest of the nucleic acid stains. Based on the Ames test, GelGreen shows no mutagenic effects on bacterial strains TA98 and TA1537 both with and without metabolic activation. Download the Biotium safety report here. | ||||||||||||||

GelGreen versus SYBR Safe

| GelGreen is 2 - 3 times more sensitive than SYBR Safe. Using GelGreen in-agarose, it is possible to detect about 0.5 ng of dsDNA by eye and about 0.2 ng using a CCD camera. | ||||||||||||||
| Identical DNA samples (3-fold dilution series) were separated using agarose containing either GelGreen or SYBR Safe and viewed on a Dark Reader transilluminator. | ||||||||||||||
